What are the benefits of temporary protected status (TPS)?
Individuals who meet certain requirements can obtain work authorization to work in the United States and cannot be deported/removed from the United States during the designated period.


What are the requirements to re-register for temporary protected status for citizens of Nicaragua and Honduras?

  • Individuals must nationals from Honduras or Nicaragua
  • Must submit a TPS application to INS (Form I-821)
  • Must submit an application for employment (Form I-765)
  • A $100 fee must accompany Form I-765
  • Must prove that you have been present in the U.S. as of January 5, 1999 and have continually resided in the U.S. since December 30, 1998.
  • Must submit proof that you previously registered for TPS. There are certain exceptions to this requirement.
  • The individual does not have a prior felony conviction or two or more misdemeanors.

What is the period of time that citizens of Nicaragua and Honduras can obtain TPS benefits?
In a news release dated May 3, 2001, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) announced that the TPS for Hondurans and Nicaraguans was extended for a period of 12 months until July 5, 2002.


How long does a citizen of Nicaragua and Honduras have to submit his application for TPS to INS?
The registration period begins upon the publication of the regulations in the Federal Register and continues to 90 days from the publication date. The publication date of this regulation was May 8, 2001.


How many individuals from Nicaragua and Honduras will be benefitted by this TPS extension?
The news release dated May 3, 2001, indicated that approximately 105,000 Hondurans and 5,300 Nicaraguans who have already registered for TPS.
