What is the visa lottery? The visa lottery is the process whereby an individual applies to obtain one of the 55,000. immigrant visas available during a fiscal year. Winning one of these immigrant visas would give the individual and his or her spouse and minor children status as a permanent resident in the United States. What is the application period? The 2002 visa lottery starts at noon (Eastern Time) on Monday, October 2, 2000 and ends at noon (Eastern Time) on Wednesday, November 1, 2000. Who qualifies for the 2002 visa lottery?
